“Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination.” Willy Wonka – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
On Wednesday 5 June, students from Years 9, 10 and 11 Drama and Music classes attended a performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The New Musical at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney.
The musical follows Charlie Bucket and four other lucky children on their tour of Willie Wonka’s marvellous and mysterious chocolate factory. This live theatre adaption featured songs from the original film, including ‘Pure Imagination’, ‘The Candy Man’ and ‘I’ve Got a Golden Ticket’ alongside several new songs. Our students were musically and theatrically inspired by the performance and were particularly awestruck by the impeccable coordination between the live orchestra and choreography.
The excursion was timely for Year 10 Music students, who are currently studying Music for Theatre this term and will be performing works from musicals for their next assessment. There are also several Year 11 students studying both Drama and Music at school this year. One of these students, Haram Na, said, “It was very valuable to have experienced a live performance at such a large scale.” Another Year 11 Drama and Music student, Seop Lim, said that “the performance gave back to him his passion for theatre”.
To round off a wonderful day, the students had the opportunity to meet the young actor who played Charlie Bucket as he exited backstage and were able to have a photo taken with him.
The students who attended are to be congratulated on their positive attitude and the way in which they represented our school. We look forward to seeing the excitement and inspiration from this excursion in the upcoming Year 11 Drama and Music performance evenings this term and the next Regents Park Christian School Musical.
