On Friday the 4th of April, 16 Stage 3 students took part in the Sydney Writers’ Festival. The students travelled by train to Sydney Town Hall and were very excited to hear from some of their favourite authors and illustrators.
First to speak was Australian author, Morris Gleitzman (Once, Two Weeks with the Queen, Misery Guts) who inspired the children with tales of his own writing journey. He encouraged them to write about subjects they are passionate about and always include interesting, juicy complications. While he spoke, talented author/illustrator Chris Riddell (Goth Girl Series, Ottoline Series) sat on the stage and drew pictures that brought Morris Gleitzman’s words to life! Later on, he also gave a talk and encouraged our budding writers to experiment with sketching and illustrating their own stories. The students also heard from Katrina Nannestad (Red Dirt Diaries) and the hilarious poet, A.F. Harold (The Song from Somewhere Else).
The students came away with their heads full of ideas, tips and tricks to put in their own writing. All in all, a fantastic day!
