In Science, our Kindergarten students have been studying a unit about living things. In order for our students to fully understand this unit, we created a hands on adventure where they were able to explore and create a living garden in the school playground and watch it grow and provide a place for living animals to live and eat.
After many weeks of planning and researching, making budgets and lists of items that they needed, the kindergarten class finally went to Bunnings to buy supplies. This was an eagerly anticipated day!
Students bought soil as well as things to make a ‘yum yum’ garden like plants and seeds as well as gloves, a bird bath and things to create a pretty garden for us all to enjoy.
This excursion has helped us to understand more about money but it is also the culmination of many weeks of work. We have been learning about gardens and what animals need to survive. We are making this garden to ensure that animals have a place to live in our school as well as to provide enjoyment and food for us.
The staff at the Bunnings, Greenacre were very kind and sent us all away with Bunnings gift bags! In the bags were Bunnings t-shirts, vests, bouncy balls and much more. Students left with excitement & eager to start their garden.
Shortly after our Bunnings adventure, Kindergarten got busy planting and creating a garden. Students spent many weeks planning and learning about gardens and it was finally time to see all their hard work come together.
It was a busy day full of exciting things to do. We filled the garden beds with soil and prepared the soil for planting. We dug holes, prepared the roots of the plants and put them inside. We watered, we mulched and we made a scarecrow to keep the birds away.
Keep your eye on the garden along Kingsland Road. We will be diligently caring for our garden. We know we need to protect it from things that might eat it and provide it with plenty of water and sunlight.
