A group of girls from Stage 1 went for a trip into the city to have a day learning about computer coding. The day began learning about Cyber Safety, creating and using passwords, and navigating webpages. They learnt what an algorithm was and practised making them. Then they had a go at sequencing coding blocks. The coding blocks were used to give directions, make sounds, actions and repeat steps. The girls learnt that importance of the algorithm was that the blocks had to be sequenced in the correct order otherwise it wouldn’t work. By the end of the day they were little geek geniuses and were making their own game application! They had a such a great time they all wanted to go home and keep creating more games all by themselves. Even though some parts of the day were challenging, because they were learning so many new and tricky skills, the girls didn’t give up and approached their learning with such a positive attitude. The learning about using a computer and basic coding that had been done at school in Kindergarten, had helped to give the girls a good start so they were ready to learn more and extend their skills even further. It was a great day and the girls showed excellent perseverance, problem solving and creativity. Well done girls!
“We made our own passwords. We made some games on the ipads. We learnt how to use the ipad. We learnt how to put the pictures in the correct order. We had fun at the Girl Geek Academy.”
