In Term 2, year 5 students learned about Earth’s Place in Space. To begin the unit, students read Bible verses (e.g. Psalm 33:6 – By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry hosts by the breath of His mouth) about God as the Creator of the universe. After reading the verses students needed to find the main idea from the verse and communicate this through a ‘Headline’ activity. This is a Visible Thinking strategy developed by Project Zero (http://www.pz.harvard.edu/projects/visible-thinking).
“This routine draws on the idea of newspaper-type headlines as a vehicle for summing up and capturing the essence of an event, idea, concept, topic, etc. The routine asks one core question:
1. If you were to write a headline for this topic or issue right now that captured the most important aspect that should be remembered, what would that headline be?”

The students worked in pairs and presented their completed ‘Headline’ posters to the class. This enabled all students to hear every verse and their friends’ reflections. The thoughtfulness of their responses was so encouraging and laid a solid foundation for the rest of the term’s learning. Well done to all of year 5!
